Bavaria

Bavaria is the wealthiest German province. Here is the birthplace of corporations like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Allianz. If Bavaria was a country, it would have been on 8th place in the world in GDP per capita.

Apart from strong economy, it offers much more – breathtaking nature, medieval towns, unique cuisine. Bavaria is easy to reach and strongly recommended destination. No matter if you are single, couple or family whit kids – Bavaria has something to offer to everyone. Dive into it and explore its secrets.

Memmingen is a small picturesque town, situated 100 km westwards from the province capital – Munich. The town offers breath-taking medieval architecture, mixed with Bavarian aristocratism. Memmingen is the 5th biggest town in Schwabia region.

How to reach

There is a direct Wizz Air flight to Memmingen from Sofia, which takes around 2 hours and is very convenient if you travel with kids. The round-trip ticket price for 2 adults with 2 kids is a bit less than 500 EUR.

If you travel by plane, we recommend to rent a car from the airport, so that you are able to explore easily not only Memmingen, but whole Bavaria. This is what we did and it was totally worth it.

You can rent a car on the link below:

Another option is to travel by car. Driving from Sofia to Memmingen will take you approximately 15 hours, without counting the borders stay. Choosing this option, it would cost you slightly higher (appr. 534 EUR for a family car, 3.0 TDI engine – see exactly for your type of car at www.viamichelin.com ), comprised of:

What to see

First must-see place is the town square, where you can see the Town Hall building – white as snow, it looks at if it comes out of a fairy tale. The square is surrounded by 3 cathedrals and there are numerous small cafes and candy shops.

There is also a small stream (Stadtbach, or Town brook) running the whole Old central part where you can see (and feed) enormous trouts.

Useful tips

Explore Bavaria by car. The infrastructure is great, which makes driving a pleasure and the best way to visit all interesting places. You can also take a detour from the main touristic sites and find your own adventure. If you travel by plane, you can easily rent a car directly from the airport. Important – we advise you to call the rental company in advance and inform them of the time of your arrival, so that they ensure there is an employee to manage your request. Wizz Air flight are arriving in the evening and the car rental companies work until 21:00 o’clock. Another recommendation is to do a full insurance – the traffic in Germany is pretty heavy and is not uncommon to scratch the paint or a rim. IN case of such even small damage, without insurance you are going to pay a hefty surcharge.

Buy online in advance the tickets for the main touristic sites. This way you are going to spare yourself the “pleasure” to queue endlessly and you can also get a discount. We highly recommend preliminary online ticket purchase for Legoland and for Neuschwanstein castle.

Food and water. The stores in Germany usually work until noon on Saturday and do not work on Sunday. Have this in mind, if you arrive during the weekend, because the only possible place to buy water and some snack would be a working gas-station.
